Cape Cod Hunger Network News

12

It has been a busy few months and we are glad to be nearing the end of our interior reconfiguration project.  The new space is wonderful and we are grateful to everyone who has helped us with the project.  So far in 2012 we are serving an average of 1100 households each month so the expanded service areas are already in use. The changes have made a more efficient and dignified experience for our clients and volunteers.    June 1, 2012 Wychmere Harbor Gala Event A very warm thank you to our many friends and supporters who joined us at the beautiful Wychmere Beach Club for our very successful Summer Gala hosted by Tom and Shelly O'Neill. The pantry simply would not exist without your support and we thank everyone who attended or made a donation to help us with our mission of providing food to those in need.   A very special thank you to our many generous sponsors   Presenting Sponsors             BackOffice Associates             Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines             Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank             Jay Cashman             Eos Foundation             Ocean Spray             Tom and Shelly O'Neill             Robert B. A brief recap of what has been accomplished: Food distribution moved into its new space a few months ago and we have had many accolades from clients who love the new brighter space with less congestion and better ability to see all that we have to offer. Online check in to the computers has gone very smoothly and we expect it will continue to get easier as people become more comfortable with the system and we work to clean up the database a bit. The boutique moved into its permanent home a few weeks ago after a couple of months of "guess where you will be working today" took place! The boutique is lovely and it is nice to have the desk painted by Helen Marsden back in use here having spent a few years at Second Glance.  The warehouse has also worked around reduced space regularly beginning in January. Kudos to Pat and the warehouse guys for moving stuff regularly (sometimes the same stuff back to where it started!) to stay out of the way of the construction. With the interview room set up and the boutique in its own space the warehouse has reclaimed some of its space and set up additional pallet racks to take advantage of vertical space since floor space is at a premium in the new configuration. We now have a private confidential area for conducting initial interviews with clients as well as processing food stamp applications and fuel assistance applications. The conference room which is more like the schools' multi purpose rooms will be used to house the office for the next month and by mid-July it will be used to run several of our programs such as the supermarket gift program, the Thanksgiving and Christmas programs. It will also be used for training classes as well as various meetings. We remain grateful to Mary-Ann Agresti, Principal Architect of The Design Initiative, whose vision for us has turned into a wonderful reality. Mary-Ann donated her own services to us billing only for her Staff and associated expenses. We are also proud to be associated with Rick Roy Construction who has done an incredible job working their construction schedule around our operation schedule. Their work is impeccable and their communication with us has been a major key to the success of the project.             Volunteers Needed- maybe there is a spot for you! 1. See How Our Garden Grows   The Family Pantry of Cape Cod welcomes back Sara Weller to a United Way funded garden supervisor position.  Recently graduated from Smith College, Sara brings her enthusiasm and charm to our production garden.  Come join Sara in our garden!  We are seeking volunteers for three morning garden shifts: Tuesday 9-12, Thursday 9-12, Saturday 9-12.  Please contact the pantry soon as we need help for the snap pea harvest in June!   2. Plastic Bottles and Cans Help The Pantry Feed those in Need   Did you know that your empties can help put food on the table for those in need throughout Cape Cod?  In addition to your plastic bottles and aluminum cans, the Pantry needs help sorting and collecting cans this summer.  It's an early morning shift so you can get about your day by 9 or 10 am.  We are seeking volunteers from 7-9:30 AM on  Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.   Please contact the pantry if you are interested in helping in this fun and easy, if not a little dirty, task.   3. Reception Positions are available throughout the week   You can help out on the phones, but you must know how to work a computer too.   Please contact Patty Watson for more information at 508-432-6519, pwatson@thefamilypantry.com.                   Sincerely,   Mary Anderson Executive Director The Family Pantry of Cape Cod  133 Queen Anne Road Harwich, MA 02645 508-432-6519 manderson@thefamilypantry.com
