Family Pantry looking for volunteers and turkeys. Volunteers: Business is booming at the pantry. In October we served 1051 clients which is a 24% increase over last September. Yikes! To better serve our clients and our volunteers we are going to start a swing shift on Tuesdays from 11:00 to 1:30. Instead of having a morning and an afternoon shift and closing from 12 to 1:30 we will stay open all day from 10AM to 3:30. To do this we need 10-12 people to staff the pantry from 11-1:30. The jobs will include helping clients with food, restocking the shelves and helping the clients with clothing in the boutique area. If you are interested please contact Patty Watson – pwatson@thefamilypantry.com or 508-432-6519.     Turkeys   Yes, it’s that time of year. The leaves have fallen, there is certain crispness to the air and the days are getting shorter. Ready or not, Thanksgiving is just a month away. This year, as in the past, we are asking anyone who can afford to do so to buy an extra turkey (frozen) when shopping for your family’s holiday meal. Bring the turkey to the Family Pantry and we will give it along with a bag with all the fixings for a complete dinner to a family who needs a little help. The Family Pantry serves families from each town on Cape Cod and a few that travel to us from the other side of the bridge. Last year we gave out over 900 turkeys between Thanksgiving and Christmas and we expect to do even more this year! We are seeing an increase in the number of families that visit us each month and with your help we will have enough turkeys to take care of all of them.   The best times to drop off the turkeys are as listed below:   Tuesdays:   7AM -12 & 1:30-3:30 Thursdays: 7AM -12 & 1:30-3:30 & 5-7PM Saturdays: 7AM -12 & 1:30-3:30

Cranberry Liquors to donate Closeout proceeds to The Family Pantry -  We are undertaking a bit of an experiment here in sleepy little Harwich Port: I had the pleasure of visiting The Family Pantry here in Harwich. After a complete tour courtesy of Mary Anderson, the Executive Director, I felt compelled to contribute in some way. Knowing I was not going to donate alcoholic beverages to the Pantry, I settled for the next best thing I could think of. From now through October, we are running our Closeouts for a Cause. Not only are prices reduced, we are donating the proceeds from our closeout section to the Family Pantry. Now, hopefully, this is going to work for everyone’s benefit. Think Win-Win-Win! Please stop by Cranberry Liquors and see if there are any items on our closeout table that interest you. If you ask me, I’ll tell you which are the really good deals!

Here is a thoughtful video that reflects back on the creation of The Family Pantry Garden.  The video was created by Sara, an intern who was actively involved in this ambitious and amazingly successful project.  Thanks to many volunteers and contributors who made this plan a reality...and a special Thank You to Sara for this video!

The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few or at least fewer than we need! The Family Pantry has been successful in providing food to people in need for over 22 years and the primary reason for our success is the group of dedicated volunteers who now number over 300! And those are just the regular volunteers who work at the pantry, thrift shop or garden every week. There are at least another hundred people who work for us on a more occasional basis! If you know anyone who volunteers at the pantry please thank them for the tremendous support they are providing to our neighbors as they need a little help. Now with 300 + volunteers you may find this hard to believe but we are looking for a few more volunteers! The specific areas that need help are: 1.       Warehouse bottles & cans crew. Recycled bottles and cans are a great revenue stream for us but it is labor intensive to collect them & then sort and bag them and we need some additional volunteers. This work is done Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays from 7AM (or 8 if 7 is too early) to 10AM. It is a fun group of people and it is educational (there is always a new beer that you have never heard of) as well as good exercise. You don’t need to work all three days – just working one will be a great help to us. 2.       Garden help will be needed this Fall as many of our student gardeners go back to school. We have work available Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays 9 to 12 as well as 1-3:30 on Tuesdays & Thursdays.   We also will have some special garden work days and would be glad to have you or your group join us for those days. 3.       The thrift shop needs people to iron, sort and arrange clothing for sale. The thrift shop is open Monday through Saturday and most people work either a morning or an afternoon the same day each week. This job does involve being on your feet and active during your shift.   If you are interested in any of these positions please call the pantry on 508-432-6519 or email pwatson@thefamilypantry.com for more information.                 If you are not able to volunteer we always welcome financial support. -- Mary Anderson The Family Pantry: Serving All of Cape Cod 133 Queen Anne Road Harwich, MA 02645 508-432-6519 x5 fax 508-432-7083 www.thefamilypantry.com

Please stop in and see how how we can help you shop economically without sacrificing quality! more photos While this is a bigger location for us and we are now able to display a lot more clothing and houshold items we still need all doantions to be brought to the pantry for sorting and storage: Drop off times at the pantry are Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays 7AM to noon, Tuesdays & Thursdays 1:30-3:30 and Thursday evenings 5-7PM at the location below: The Family Pantry 133 Queen Anne Road Harwich, MA 02645 All proceeds from this shop go back to support The Family Pantry. The Family Pantry is the only large food pantry that serves all of Cape Cod. In 2010 the organization provided food and clothing to over 3,000 Cape Cod households which included just under 8,000 people. The Family Pantry's considerable experience and the resources that it brings to the Cape's hunger relief network have earned it a leadership role as the lead partner for the Greater Boston Food Bank on Cape Cod.
